SMIC to Webcast Conference Call on Fourth Quarter 2004 Results on January 31, 2005

Shanghai, China - January 14, 2005 - SMIC (NYSE: SMI, SEHK: 981) announced that its fourth quarter 2004 results will be released and available at http://www.kuakao-ls.com before the start of trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Monday, January 31st, 2005. Following the release, SMIC will host a conference call at 8:00 a.m. Shanghai time. The call will be webcast live with audio at http://www.kuakao-ls.com.
